Blackwell Science LTD
recently published (early 2003) a new book, entitled "Mites (Acari) for
Pest Control", by ASA members Uri Gerson, Robert L. Smiley, and Ronald
Ochoa. It is an updated and much expanded text that is intended
to replace "Acarine Biocontrol Agents: An Illustrated Key and
Manual". The new book includes data on the 34 acarine families
(five more than the first
version) that contain mites useful for the control of insects, mites
and
nematodes as well as weeds (a subject new to this book). It also
provides
an illustrated key to these mites, chapters about collecting and
rearing,
sex ratios, effect of host plants and agricultural chemicals, how to
demonstrate their controlling effect, environmental and commercial
aspects,
recommendations for future work, a glossary, and an updated list of
relevant
publications (about 1,600). It sells for $147 (US) in the
hardbound
edition (ISBN: 0-632-05658-4).

Edited by

G. Stanek, University of Vienna, Austria
Lyme borreliosis commonly known as lyme disease
is now
acknowledged as the most highly
prevalent arthropod-borne human disease in northern
temperate regions of the world. This book describes
the basic characteristics of the disease, the biology of the pathogens
in their vectors and vertebrate hosts, their ecology in different
regions of the world and the global epidemiology
of the disease. The final chapters address the
prevention and control measures that have resulted from
this knowledge.

LucID Professional is a powerful but simple system that lets you constructand view interactive identification keys to almost anything.

The Windows-based program consists of two modules: the LucID Builder, which allows researchers and other users to design and build their own identification keys for any group of organisms or array of material; and the LucID Player, which allows interactive use of those identification keys.
LucID Professional is a research, decision-support and educational tool that is easy to use but includes many powerful features.
The LucID Player can act as an identification key to items held in its data files, but it can also provide information about the item once it has been identified. This information comes in the form of text, audio files, photographs or video clips. The LucID Builder enables you to construct these powerful interactive keys and to incorporate related multimedia information.

LIVESTOCK INSECT WORKERS CONFERENCE
and
June 10-14, 2007
A combined meeting of the International Symposium on Ectoparasites of Pets
and the Livestock Insect Workers Conference will be held in Lexington, Kentucky (USA), June 10-14, 2007.
This meeting offers a unique opportunity for veterinarians, entomologists, clinicians, researchers, industry representatives, and others interested in arthropods affecting companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.) and domestic animals (beef, dairy, poultry, sheep, etc.). Research presentations will span basic biology, ecology, host-parasite interactions, disease transmission, zoonoses, medications, insecticides, etc.
Participants include veterinarians (dermatologists, parasitologists, clinicians, etc.), epidemiologists, entomologists, and industry supporters who are involved in research involving pet ectoparasites such as fleas, ticks, lice, mosquitoes, etc., as well as the pathogens they transmit.
You are invited to submit a talk (12-minute length) for presentation at the meeting.
Title and Abstract Submission Deadline: April 15, 2007
To make a submission and for further information, go to the ISEP/LIWC
conference website at http://www.pestmanagement.info/ISEP_LIWC/
We look forward to seeing you in Lexington!
